Calculator Methodology & Sources

How we build our financial estimates — and where every calculation stops being a substitute for professional advice.

What our calculators are designed to do

FreeMoneyIQ calculators provide educational financial estimates for planning and comparison purposes. They combine publicly available rate data, standard financial formulas, and user-entered values to produce illustrative results. These results are planning tools — not quotes, guaranteed outcomes, tax advice, or investment recommendations.

Important: Interest rates, tax rules, and financial benchmarks change frequently. Calculator results reflect the data and assumptions available at the time of the last review. Verify current rates with lenders, the IRS, or a licensed financial professional before making financial decisions.

How an estimate is built

  1. Standard financial formulas: Mortgage payments use the standard amortization formula. Compound interest uses the standard A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt) formula. Loan payoff dates use iterative balance reduction. These are the same formulas used by financial institutions.
  2. Published benchmark data: Rate ranges and averages are sourced from federal agencies (Freddie Mac, Federal Reserve, IRS) and widely cited financial publications. Sources are identified on individual calculator pages where applicable.
  3. User-entered values only: Calculators apply only the values you enter. They cannot account for your complete financial picture, credit profile, lender-specific requirements, or tax situation.
  4. Estimates, not guarantees: Results are displayed as estimates. Actual loan payments, savings growth, and tax withholding will differ based on lender terms, compounding frequency, rate changes, and individual circumstances.
  5. Private calculation: All calculations run in your browser. No data is submitted to FreeMoneyIQ or stored on our servers.

Limitations by calculator type

Mortgage calculators

Results show estimated monthly principal and interest only. They do not include property taxes, homeowners insurance, HOA fees, or PMI — all of which affect your actual monthly payment. Rate-specific calculators use benchmark rates that may not match what any lender offers you based on your credit score and loan details.

Loan payoff calculator

Assumes a fixed interest rate and consistent extra payment amounts. Variable-rate loans, prepayment penalties, or payment holidays will change the actual payoff timeline.

Compound interest calculator

Assumes a constant rate of return. Actual investment returns fluctuate. This calculator is appropriate for illustrating the concept of compound growth — not for projecting specific investment outcomes.

Tax withholding calculator

Provides an estimate based on IRS withholding tables for the current year. Does not account for all deductions, credits, state taxes, self-employment tax, or other income sources. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator for a more complete picture.

Updates, corrections, and monetization

We update rate data and review calculator assumptions at least quarterly. The review date on each page reflects the last substantive check of the underlying data and formulas — not a cosmetic refresh.
